Donald W. Alger
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Donald W. Alger, 82, of this town, died Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Home.
He was born July 6, 1927 in Greenfield, Mass., son of James Alger and Lina Balch. He lived in Westfield, Mass. for many years. To those he grew up with over the years, he was known as “Doc”. He was a graduate of Westfield High School and attended Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. He served in the US Navy during World War II, aboard the USS Billfish (SS 286) submarine.
He was employed by Hamilton Standard in Connecticut, and was Vice President and Sales Manager for B and E Tool Co., formerly in Southwick, Mass. He served a term as City Councilor for the city of Westfield, Mass., and was a trustee at a local bank.
He faced many health challenges in the latter part of his life. He was known for his sharp wit, his optimism, and his superior memory skills. He was an inspiration to his children.
He leaves a son, Steven G. Alger and his wife Karen of Baden, Switzerland and Somers, Conn.; his daughter, Susan A. Murdock and her husband Scott of Suffield, Conn.; two sisters, Shirley Glaze of Tavernier, Fla. and Barbara Malcolm of West Yarmouth, Mass. and his former wife, Joan Aylward; his grandchildren, David Alger and his wife Dorothy, Richard Alger and his wife Alison, Jeffrey Alger, Brian Alger and his wife Lindsey, Amanda Murdock and her husband Andre Maxwell, and Scott R. Murdock. He also leaves two great grandchildren, newborn twins Zoey and Lucy Alger.
Following Don’s wishes, his ashes will be scattered at sea in accordance with US Navy protocol, from the Jacksonville, FL Naval Base.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, followed by a memorial service, at the Firtion-Adams Funeral home Broad St., Westfield, MA. Friends and family are invited to attend this memorial tribute to celebrate the life and legacy of Donald “Doc” Alger. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Douglas T. Jacobson Veterans Home for the care and attention that Don received, as well as Tidewell Hospice.

Albert J. Dekarski
WESTFIELD – Albert Joseph Dekarski 37, of this city, died Sunday, December 6, 2009 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
He was born in Westfield on April 23, 1972. He was a resident of Granby for 11 years, returning home to his family in 2009. He attended local schools.
He was employed for many years at Granby Grain in Granby. He was an avid outdoorsman who had a deep appreciation for nature. He also owned and operated Traditions Taxidermy in Granby.
He leaves his children, Hunter, Cheyenne and Mystie and their mother Amy who offered support and comfort toward the end of his illness. He leaves his mom, Linda Dekarski and his dad Robert Carr; his brothers, Joseph Dekarski of Westfield and Anthony and his wife Heather of Russell; a sister, Angela Dekarski of Westfield; a nephew, Drew Dekarski with whom he lived; and many special aunts,uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends to numerous to mention.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad St., Westfield, with a memorial service will follow.

WESTFIELD – Jean A. (Kisla) Rura, 91, of this city, died Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield.
Born and raised in Westfield, she was a lifelong resident. She attended Westfield High School and was a faithful communicant of St. Peter and St. Casimir Church. She was also a member of its former study and Social Club and a current member of its Rosary Sodality. She was also a former member of the Holy Trinity Rosary Sodality, all in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, John L. in 1998. She leaves two daughters, Joanne M. Osowski and her husband Dr. Donald J. Osowski and Alicia J. Belanger and her husband Gary W. Belanger, all of Westfield; seven beloved grandchildren, Mary M. Owen, Marc J. Belanger, Caroline M. Wagner, Melanie J. Koumentakos PA-C, Stephanie A. Carlin M.D., John J. Osowski M.D. and Anne M. Rutkowski D.M.D.; and 12 cherished great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. from the Robert E. Cusack Funeral Home, 94 Main St. Rte 20, followed by a Liturgy of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter and St. Casimir Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, all in Westfield. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Deborah A. Knowles
WESTFIELD – Deborah A. Knowles, 55, of this city, died Sunday, December 6, 2009 at home.
She was born on September 6, 1954 in Springfield to Webster and Mary (Bowler) Knowles. She graduated from Agawam High School and lived in Westfield for most of her life. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church, Westfield. She found comfort in her faith in Jesus. She enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, decorating and needlework.
She leaves her daughter, Nichole Benson of West Springfield; her mother, Mary A. (Bowler) Knowles of Feeding Hills; and three brothers, Brian and Diane Knowles and Glenn Knowles both of Feeding Hills and Keith and Debbie Knowles of Jupiter, Fla.; her aunts, Patricia Krupa, Margaret Bowler, Josie McNulty; and uncles Elbert and his wife Bernice Bowler and James Bowler; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Joel Benson in 1994 and Lucas Benson in 2002.

LUDLOW – Helen C. (Miarecki) Borek, 90, of Lee Lang Terrace, West Springfield and a former longtime resident of Miller Street, Ludlow, died Sunday, December 6, 2009 at home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Borek in 1989. She leaves her children, Dr. Thomas J. Borek, Sr. of Westfield and Barbara H. Pyers of Ludlow; her grandchildren; her sisters, Jennie Clark of West Springfield and Nellie Klarzak of Ludlow; and many nieces and nephews.

Marion E. Laraway
HOLYOKE – Marion E. (McFaul) Laraway, 73, a lifelong Holyoke resident, died Monday, December 7, 2009.
She was born on January 22, 1936, a daughter of the late John “Chicky” and Eleanor (Hagan) Laraway. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Holyoke High School and also attended Holyoke Community College.
She retired after 10 years of service as an administrative assistant for the American Red Cross. She was a very active political supporter and contributor of the community and a member of the Republican Club, a board member of the Holyoke Geriatric Authority, volunteered her free time at blood drives, member of the Women’s Moose Club of Chicopee, AARP, Republican National Committee, and member of the Order of the Eastern Star – Robert Morris Chapter 51.
She was the wife of the late Vincent R. Laraway, who died on May 15, 2008. She leaves two sons, Vincent of Florida and Clifford of Westfield; her daughter, Elizabeth Brosnan, of Sturbridge; and eight grandchildren, Dennis, Kaitlin, and Patrick Brosnan of Sturbridge, Clifford, Treavor, Conner and Catie Laraway, of Westfield, and Samantha Laraway, of Florida.
Calling hours will be held at the Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton St., (Route 5) Holyoke on Wednesday, December 9 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald H. Campion in 2002. She leaves six children, Christine Hurst of Belchertown, Marilyn Thompson of Westfield, Gerald S. of Chicopee, Theresa Roy of Wilbraham, Kevin J. of Wilbraham, and Paul J. of Naperville, Ill.; She was predeceased by Patricia (Martin) Campion, wife of Gerald S. She also leaves 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by five brothers and four sisters. She leaves a brother, Daniel J. Quirk of Chicopee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

WESTFIELD – Genero “Tito” Rodriguez, of this city, died Tuesday, December 1, 2009.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Maria Isabel Rodriguez Luna. He leaves his wife, Elena Santiago of Puerto Rico; seven sons and daughters, Gilbert of Westfield, Maria of Puerto Rico, Hector, Norma, Benjamin, Janice, Jenaro, Jr. and Antonio, all of Westfield; and several brothers, sisters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-children and step-grandchildren.

WESTFIELD – Rosa E. (Dewey) Brett, 86, of this city, died Friday December 4, 2009.
She was born in Westfield on October 5, 1923, daughter of the late George F. and Elizabeth (Graff) Dewey. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Westfield and where she was a Sunday School Teacher for 50 years.
She worked at Ames Department Store in Westfield for 25 years. She enjoyed traveling, cleaning her house and taking care of her family.
She leaves her husband of 63 years, Philip E. Brett; her children, Robert E. Brett and his wife Linda of Bountiful, Utah, Karen E. Niedzialek and her husband Henry of Westfield and Colleen D. Cuzzone and her husband John of Arrington, Tenn.; three brothers, Robert G. Dewey and his wife Shirley of Westfield, Richard D. Dewey, Sr. of Westfield, and Raymond F. Dewey and his wife Jane of Enfield, Conn., a sister, Ruth E Darling and her husband Daniel of Westfield; five grandchildren, Patti Niedzialek and her fiance Scott, Brian Niedzialek, Sandra King and her husband Kevin and Anthony and Robyn Cuzzone; three great-grandchildren; a step-sister, Barbara Emerson and her husband Vernon of Burlington, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews. CHICOPEE – Joseph S. Czabaj, Jr., 76, of this city, died Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Country Estates of Agawam.
He leaves his wife, Shirley J. (Skiba) Czabaj; a son, Daniel Czabaj of Deer Park, Ill.; a daughter, Lynn Bydlak of Westfield; two sisters, Sophie Czermak of Holyoke and Irene Bielecki of Chicopee; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Wanda Lareau.

FEEDING HILLS – Michael Ristaino, Jr., 76, of Day Street, died Wednesday at Baystate Medical Center.
He leaves his wife, Irene (Johnson) Ristaino; a daughter, Marilyn Kusnierz of Westfield; and two sisters, Mary Rotz of Deland, Fla. and Linda Lucia of Westfield. He was predeceased by three sisters, JoAnne Coffey, Gloria Girard and Debra Vasso.

WESTFIELD – Charles P. Vella, Sr., “Charlie” 93, of this city, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009 in Westfield.
He was born in Westfield to the late Frederick and Carmella (Agro) Vella and was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Grace (Lamana) Vella who passed away in 1998.
He resided in Westfield and was a graduate of Westfield High School. Charlie was a veteran of World War II serving in Europe in the 104th Yankee Division including combat in the Battle of the Bulge.
He worked and retired from American Bosch in 1973.
He leaves his loving family who meant the world to him. He leaves his loving children, Fred and Lynne Vella of Worthington, Chuck and Karen Vella of Agawam, and Les and Joanne LeFebvre of Westfield; his sister, Frances and her husband Ray LeBlanc of Westfield. He also leaves his adoring grandchildren who will miss him and his stories, Michelle Coach and her husband Chris, James Vella, Michael LeFebvre, Christopher, Matthew and Kerrie Vella; two great-grandchildren James and Elizabeth Grace; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving granddaughter Gina Marie in 1984 and his brothers, Alfred, Rosario (Rosie), and Thomas (Red) Vella.

WESTFIELD – Richard P. Zawadzki, 61, of this city, died Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Noble Hospital surrounded by his wife, son and family.
He was born on November 9, 1948 in Aldershot, England to the late Aleksander and Leokadia (Wawrzynczyk) Zawadzki.
He worked for Osley & Whitney of Westfield for over 35 years and also for Tell Tool of Westfield for seven years. He was an avid photographer who was a member of the Westfield Camera Club for several years and a 2 star exhibitor for the Photographic Society of America. He was also involved with the Westfield Little League for many years.
He leaves his wife of over 41 years, Marie (Barkyoumb) of Westfield; a son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons, Pastor Richard Alexander, Kerry Lynn (Arenius), Eric Joshua and Luke Aleksander Zawadzki of Jackson, MI; his sister and brother-in-law, Sophie (Zawadzki) and Roger Blood of Feeding Hills; and a brother-in law and sister-in-law, Tim and Maria Barkyoumb of Fountin Inn, S.C. Also, his two furry friends, Chuck and Lady.

She was a daughter to the late Richard C. and Elizabeth Roach. She leaves her husband, Vincent; a son, Edward “Ted” Leal of Westfield; two grandchildren; a sister, Claudia Trzeciak of Monson; and several nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, William, by her step-mother, Eleanor, and by her brothers, Kenneth and Richard Roach.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Colonial-Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main St., Agawam with calling hours beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Robert was the beloved husband of Karen of Hampden.
He leaves his wife, Karen A. (Harriman) Labodycz; three children, Brian R. Labodycz of Southwick, Kim Bailey of Hampden, and Loreen Allen of Westfield; a sister, Irene Boyd; and six grandchildren.
A period of visitation will be held Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen St., Springfield, followed by a service at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private.

He leaves his wife, Margaret Spitzer of Arcadia; four children, Linda Jones of Middlefield, Mass., Phyllis Spitzer of Easthampton, Mass., William Spitzer, Jr. of Worthington, Mass., and Scott Spitzer of Ashfield, Mass.; his brothers, Walter Spitzer of Westfield, Mass., Charles Spitzer of Pittsfield, Mass., Rudolph Pfeiler of Hinsdale, Mass. and John Pfeiler of Rochester, N.Y.; a sister, Nancy Macomber of Worthington, Mass.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

WESTFIELD – Ruth M. (Armitage) Madigan 83, of this city, died Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Noble Hospital.
She was born in Albany, N.Y. on April 4, 1926, daughter of the late John E. and Margaret (Nolan) Armitage. She graduated from Holy Name Academy and the Mildred Elley School, both in Albany, N.Y.
She was employed for 30 years by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance as the principal data entry operator, retiring in 1983. She moved to Westfield in 2005 and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Westfield. She was very active in Democratic Politics in Schenectady, N.Y.
She was the widow of James J. Madigan Jr. who died in 1995. She leaves a son, James J. Madigan III and his wife Lena of Westfield; a grandson, James J. Madigan IV of Westfield; a sister, Jean Burmaster and her husband Arthur of Schenectady, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Joseph Armitage and by a sister, Rita Rigney.
The funeral will be held Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Firtion Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad St., Westfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 30 Bartlett St., Westfield at 10:30 a.m. Burial was in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, N.Y. at 2:00 p.m. A calling hour will precede the service from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

John M. Canning
WESTFIELD – John M. “Jack” Canning, 78 of this city, and long time former resident of 705 Allen St., Springfield, died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at home after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family.
Born and educated in Springfield, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary Ellen (Hurley) Canning. He was a 1948 graduate of Springfield Technical High School, Mass. College of Pharmacy in 1952.
He worked as a registered pharmacist in Springfield and Longmeadow for many years. After studying at UMass, he successfully passed his National Board Exams to become a Registered Sanitarian in 1966. He joined the Springfield Health Dept. and served the City of Springfield as Deputy Commissioner of Public Health until his retirement in 1996. He worked part time for the State Dept. of Public Health as a Pharmacist for The Tuberculosis Control Program. He was also an adjunct Professor of Community Health at Springfield College.
He was a lover of music and enjoyed playing the piano and singing in the choir at St. Anthony’s Maronite Church, Springfield. He enjoyed golfing, swimming, and exercising, watching the Red Sox & Patriots, traveling and cruising with family and friends, and dancing with his wife.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (Evans) Canning; his children, Christine M. Magdycz and her husband Richard of Westfield, Robert J. Canning and his wife Laurie of So. Yarmouth, and Lisa M. Kerr of Ware; five loved and adored grandchildren who were the joy of his life, Kristin M. Magdycz, Alyssa M. Magdycz, Erin E. Kerr, Christopher M. Kerr, and Thomas J. Canning; a brother, Francis Canning and his wife Margaret of Springfield; a sister, Eleanor T. McNerney of Springfield; and many loved nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, William J. Canning, and by a darling granddaughter, Kelsey Ann Canning.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 8:45 a.m. from the Forastiere-Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow, followed by services at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Maronite Church, 419 Island Pond Rd., Springfield, MA. Raymond C. Kurowski
WESTFIELD – Raymond C. Kurowski, 69, of this city, died at home surrounded by his family Saturday, November 28, 2009, after a brief illness.
He was born in the Brightwood section of Springfield on August 30, 1940, son of the late Michael F. and Lillian C. (Gervais) Kurowski. He attended local schools in Springfield and graduated from Commerce High School. He had a great love for the food business and was employed as the Production Director for Sodexho Food Service at Westfield State College, retiring in 2006. Prior to Sodexho he was the Director of Operations for Hardees Food Systems, traveling up and down the east coast opening restaurants and providing training for 12 years. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Westfield and a US Air Force Veteran who served in Germany during the Berlin Crisis.
He leaves his best friend and beloved wife of 31 years, Doris A. (Jubinville) Kurowski; his children, Michael D. Kurowski of Cheshire, Mark S. Kurowski and his wife Lynn of Westfield, Lisa M. Voudren and her husband Christopher of Westfield, Debra A. Horton and her husband Michael Fitzgerald of Ashfield, and Brian D. Horton and his fianc Tammy Wagg of Coventry, Conn.; a sister, Elaine Bracci of Southampton; his cherished 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Kurowski. He will also be sorely missed by a multitude of nieces, nephews and dear friends.

SPRINGFIELD – Walter H. Dziengelewski, 80 of Southwick, died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield.
He was born in Suffield, Conn., on December 24, 1928 a son of the late Stanley and Mary (Blum) Dziengelewski. He was educated in the Suffield school system and later moved to Southwick. He proudly served in the U.S. Marines in the Korean Conflict.
He was a successful dairy farmer in Southwick for many years. I
n addition to his parents he was predeceased by first wife, Frances (Tkacz) Dziengelewski, by a sister, Gladys Gogulski, and by one grandson. He leaves his wife, Vivian E. (Boyer) Dziengelewski of Southwick; four children, Paul Dziengelewski and his wife Chris of Westfield, Walter Dziengelewski of Feeding Hills, Joan Smith of Wethersfield, Conn., and John Dziengelewski and his wife Sue of Southwick; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

WEST SPRINGFIELD – John Stathis, 81, of this city, died Saturday, November 28, 2009 at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home.
He leaves two children, Edward Stathis of Springfield and Nancy Stathis of Westfield; a brother-in-law, Edward Mullarkey of Southwick; a sister-in-law, Ruth Stathis of Springfield; many cousins; and one niece and two nephews. He was predeceased by his longtime companion of 30 years, Alberta “Lisa” Kupau, by two brothers, Costas “Gus” Stathis and Angelo Stathis and by a sister, Jean (Stathis) Mullarkey.
Family and friends are invited to meet for services on Friday, December 4, 2009, at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Luke, 400 Prospect St., East Longmeadow. James J. Sabadosa
WESTFIELD – James J. Sabadosa, 89, a lifelong resident of this city, died Monday, June 29, 2009 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield.
He was a retired 45 year employee at Columbia Manufacturing. He served with the U. S. Army during World War II in Africa and Europe. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and member of the American Legion Post 454, both in Westfield. He was also a member of the 40 and 8 Club, Holyoke. He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Lois J. (Greer) Sabadosa died in 2007. He leaves a brother, Louis of Westfield; and many cherished nieces and nephews from the local area.
The funeral and visitation will be held Thursday at 8:00 a.m. from the Robert E. Cusack Funeral Home, 94 Main St. Rte 20, followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, all in Westfield.

Carlene M. Berube
SOUTHWICK – Carlene M. Berube (Cyr) Americk, 54, of this town, died, Sunday, June 28th.
Formerly of Granby, Conn., she was the daughter of Herman and Carmelle (Berube) Cyr.
A 1972 graduate of Granby High School, she worked at Travelers Insurance and was a former teaching assistant at Woodland Elementary School (Southwick). She enjoyed treasure hunting, birds, gardening and was a disability rights activist.
A loving wife, devoted mother and proud grandmother, she will be missed tremendously.
She leaves her loving husband of 34 years, Stephen T. Americk; a son, Matthew, of Suffield, Conn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Frank Parnin and their children, Mary and Samantha, also of Suffield, Conn.; and three brothers Richard Berube, Leon and Robert Cyr.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Service from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Forastiere Funeral Home, 624 College Highway, Southwick, MA.

SPRINGFIELD – Alice Demers, 52, of this city, died Monday, June 29, 2009 at Baystate Medical Center.
She was predeceased by her father, Roy Demers, and by three brothers, Roy Demers, Jr, Joseph Demers and Edward Demers. She leaves her life partner, Gordon Marwick; her mother, Geneva Demers of Agawam; a brother, Robert Demers of Holyoke; three sisters, Barbara Monti of Feeding Hills, and Joan Dunn and Linda Suzor, both of Indian Orchard; her stepchildren, Shawn Marwick of Westfield, Frank Marwick of Puerto Rico and Dawn Marwick Rossi of West Springfield; and many nephews and nieces.
A Liturgy of Christian burial will be held Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in St Mary’s Church, Springfield, followed by Rites of Interment in St Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nowak Funeral and Cremation Services.

WESTFIELD €“ Bettie Mae (Kennedy) Miller, 86, of this city, died Friday, June 26, 2009 in a local nursing home.
She was born in Westfield on February, 8, 1923, daughter of the late John and Mary (Maloney) Kennedy. She has been a lifelong resident of Westfield and was a 1941 graduate of Westfield High School and a 1944 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.
She was a nurse at Mercy Hospital and a nurse at Noble Hospital for 33 years, retiring in 1984. She was a communicant of St. Peters & St. Casimir€™s Parish, Westfield and was a member of its Rosary Sodality. She was a member of the Sons of Erin and was an avid golfer.
She was the widow of John S. Miller who died on February 14, 1999. She leaves three nieces and five nephews and her caregivers, her brother and sister-in-law, William and Carol Miller of Agawam; and sister-in-laws, Kathleen Miller and Ann Jakus, both of Westfield. She was predeceased by her brothers, Robert and John Kennedy.
